The A-League is the top-flight professional football (soccer) league in Australia. It was founded in 2004 by Football Federation Australia (FFA), the sport’s governing body in the country, as a successor to the National Soccer League (NSL).
The first A-League season began in August 2005, with eight teams competing: Adelaide United, Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, New Zealand Knights, Perth Glory, Queensland Roar, and Sydney FC. The inaugural season was won by Sydney FC, who defeated Central Coast Mariners 1-0 in the Grand Final.
Since then, the A-League has grown to include 12 teams, with Macarthur FC joining the competition in 2020. The league is structured as a single table, with each team playing each other three times during the regular season. At the end of the season, the top six teams qualify for the finals series, culminating in the Grand Final.
The A-League is currently owned and operated by Football Australia, the successor to FFA. The league is sponsored by Hyundai, and its clubs are owned by a combination of private investors, clubs, and local councils.
The 2022 A-League Australia season kicked off on October 7th, 2022 and will conclude on April 30th, 2023. Twelve teams are competing for the championship, with 156 out of 72 matches already played. At the moment, the top three teams are separated by only 5 points, with Melbourne City leading the standings with 16 points, followed by Western Sydney Wanderers and Western Sydney Wanderers with 13 and 11 points respectively. However, there are still 84 matches to be played, so the standings could change drastically over the course of the season. The Western Sydney Wanderers boast the largest stadium in the A-League Australia, with a total capacity of 84,000. The highest attendance per game in the 21/22 season was 40,504, during the match between Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC. Across the entire season, the total attendance was 1,457,540, with an average attendance per game of 10,411.
The A-League Australia is the premier football league in Australia, and its largest TV partner is Fox Sports. The Football Federation Australia is the official organization in charge of the league.
