The Landesliga - Salzburg in Austria was founded in the early 1950s and is the second highest amateur football league in the country. It is made up of teams from the Salzburg region, which is located in the north-west of Austria. The league is managed by the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) and is part of the Austrian Football League (ÖFL).
The first games of the Landesliga - Salzburg took place in the 1951/52 season, when the league was made up of eight teams. Since then, the league has grown to include 16 teams, with the most recent expansion taking place in the 2018/19 season. The teams are divided into two divisions, with the top eight teams playing in the Championship Division and the remaining eight teams playing in the Promotion Division.
The Landesliga - Salzburg is a corporate structure, with teams playing in the league being members of the ÖFB. Each team is responsible for its own finances, and the league is run by a board of directors. At the end of each season, the top four teams in the Championship Division qualify for the Austrian Cup, while the bottom four teams in the Promotion Division are relegated to the regional leagues. The winner of the Championship Division is crowned the champion of the Landesliga - Salzburg.
The Landesliga - Salzburg is one of the most competitive amateur leagues in Austria, with teams competing for promotion to the top-tier Austrian Bundesliga. The league has produced some of the country’s most successful players, including former Austrian internationals Andreas Herzog and Andreas Ivanschitz. The league also serves as a platform for young players to develop their skills and gain experience before making the jump to the professional level.
The 2022 season of the Landesliga - Salzburg Austria kicked off on August 6th, 2022 and is set to conclude on June 10th, 2023. 14 teams have been competing for the championship and, so far, 182 out of the total of 91 matches have been played. The current standings are incredibly tight, with only one point separating the top three teams. Thalgau currently leads the table with 27 points, followed by Bürmoos and Bürmoos with 26 and 26 points respectively. However, there are still 91 matches left to be played, so the standings could easily change.
