The Birinci Dasta is the top tier of Azerbaijani football. Founded in 1992, it is the most prestigious football league in the country and is regarded as one of the best in the region. The league is made up of 12 teams, with the season running from March to November. The current champions are Qarabag FK.
The league was founded in 1992, shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The first season featured 8 teams, including Neftchi Baku, FK Karvan, and Shamkir. The first season saw Neftchi Baku crowned as champions, with FK Karvan finishing as runners-up. Since then, the league has grown to 12 teams, with the most recent expansion being in 2017.
The league is governed by the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA). The AFFA is responsible for the organization and regulation of the league, as well as the promotion of football in the country. The AFFA also organizes the annual Azerbaijan Cup, which is a knockout tournament featuring teams from the Birinci Dasta and the lower divisions.
The Birinci Dasta is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the region. It has produced some of the best players in the world, such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who currently plays for Arsenal. The league also has a long and proud history, and is sure to continue to be a major player in the world of football for many years to come.
The 2022 season of Birinci Dasta Azerbaidjan kicked off on August 24th, 2022 and is set to conclude on May 23rd, 2023. Fifteen teams are competing for the championship, with 210 out of the total of 105 matches already having been played. The top three teams in the standings are currently separated by only two points, with Neftçi II in the lead with 25 points, followed by Turan II and Turan II with 24 and 23 points respectively. However, with 105 matches still to be played, the standings could still change drastically.
