Football League 1st League - RS in Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Brief History
The Football League 1st League - RS in Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded in 1996, following the breakup of Yugoslavia. The league was formed as a result of the Dayton Agreement, which divided the country into two political entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Republika Srpska. The Football League 1st League - RS was established as a separate entity within the Republika Srpska.
The first season of the Football League 1st League - RS was held in 1996-97. The league consisted of 12 teams, including Borac Banja Luka, FK Radnik Bijeljina, FK Sloboda Tuzla, FK Sarajevo, FK Zvijezda Gradačac, FK Željezničar Sarajevo, FK Drina Zvornik, FK Leotar Trebinje, FK Modriča, FK Olimpik Sarajevo, FK Rudar Prijedor, and FK Velež Mostar.
The Football League 1st League - RS is governed by the Football Association of Republika Srpska (FSRS). The league is divided into two divisions, the First and Second League. The top two teams from each division are promoted to the First League, while the bottom two teams are relegated to the Second League. The winner of the First League is crowned the champion of the Republika Srpska.
The Football League 1st League - RS has been a successful league since its inception, with many teams competing for the title each season. The league has also produced some of the best players in the region, with many of them going on to play for top clubs in Europe and beyond.
The 2022-2023 RS Bosnia 1st League season kicked off on August 6th, 2022 and is set to conclude on March 4th, 2023. 18 teams are competing for the title, and with 162 out of 153 matches already played, the top three teams are separated by only 9 points. Krupa na Vrbasu leads the standings with 46 points, followed closely by Sloboda Novi Grad and Sloboda Novi Grad with 42 and 37 points respectively. With 9 matches still to play, these three teams are in a tight race for the championship.
