The first games of the Elite One were played in 1972, with the first champions being Canon Yaoundé.
The Elite One is composed of 18 clubs, all of which compete for the championship title. The league is divided into two halves, with the top eight teams from each half competing in the championship playoffs. The bottom two teams from each half are relegated to the second division, while the top two teams from the second division are promoted to the Elite One. The league season runs from October to May, with each team playing a total of 30 matches.
The Elite One is managed by the Cameroon Football Federation, which is responsible for organizing the league, setting regulations and rules, and appointing referees. The Federation is also responsible for the selection of national team players, and for the promotion and development of football in Cameroon.
