Primera B in Colombia: A Brief History
The Colombian football league Primera B was founded in 1948 as the second tier of the Colombian football league system. The first season of Primera B featured 12 teams from across the country, with the inaugural game taking place on April 18th between Deportivo Pereira and Deportes Tolima. The first Primera B champions were Deportivo Cali, who won the title in the 1948/49 season.
Since its inception, Primera B has seen many changes in its structure and corporate organization. In the early years, the league was managed by the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) and was divided into two regional divisions, each with its own champion. In the 1970s, the FCF restructured the league into a single division with a promotion/relegation system. In the 1990s, the league was taken over by the Colombian Professional Football League (LPF) and the number of teams was increased to 20.
Today, Primera B is organized and managed by the LPF and is divided into two groups of 10 teams each. The teams play each other twice during the regular season, with the top four teams from each group advancing to the playoffs. The winner of the playoffs is crowned the Primera B champion and is promoted to the top tier of Colombian football, the Primera A.
The 2022 Primera B season ended on November 30th, with Chico crowned as champions after winning four out of their six matches. It was a tightly contested season, with only five points separating the top three teams in the standings. Chico’s success was built on a solid defensive record, conceding just four goals in their six matches. They also boasted the league’s top scorer, Juan Ramirez, who netted five times in the season. The other two teams in the top three, Cortulua and Deportivo Pereira, also enjoyed successful campaigns. Cortulua were the only team to remain unbeaten, while Deportivo Pereira were the only team to record a win against Chico. The 2022 Primera B season was an exciting and closely fought one, with Chico emerging as champions. It promises to be an even more competitive season in 2023.The Primera B is a Colombian football competition that began in 1991, with Envigado as the inaugural league winner. The teams are divided into 18 tables, with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. Each team plays a total of 298 games in one season, and the team with the most points at the end of the season is declared the winner.
The Primera B Colombia football league boasts some impressive stadiums, with the largest being Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero. This stadium has a total capacity of 33,130, making it the largest in the league. Attendance at Primera B Colombia matches is also high, with many stadiums regularly reaching capacity.
The Colombian Football Federation is the official organization in charge of the Primera B Colombia football league. The largest TV partners for the league are Win Sports and RCN Nuestra Tele Internacional.
