The Primera División de Costa Rica is the top tier of professional football in Costa Rica. It was founded in 1921 as the Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Costa Rica, with the first game being played on August 7th of that year between Herediano and Cartaginés. The league was initially composed of four teams, Herediano, Cartaginés, Alajuelense and Saprissa, and the first champion was Herediano.
The Primera División is currently composed of 12 teams and is managed by the Federación Costarricense de Fútbol (Costa Rican Football Federation). The season runs from February to December and the champion is crowned at the end of the season. The league is divided into two stages, the Apertura and Clausura, with the champions of each stage playing in the Grand Final to determine the overall champion.
The Primera División is one of the most competitive leagues in Central America and has produced some of the best players in the region. It is also one of the most successful leagues in CONCACAF, with Saprissa being the most successful team in the region with 25 league titles.
The Primera División Costa-Rica season 2022 is off to a great start, kicking off on July 19th 2022 and set to finish on May 7th 2023. The top three teams in the standings are currently CS Herediano with 38 points, LD Alajuelense with 31 points and LD Alajuelense with 22 points, however there are still 126 matches to be played. The top three teams are separated by 16 points, so the competition is still wide open and anything can happen in the remaining matches. It will be interesting to see which team will come out on top and be crowned champions. The Primera División Bolivia is the top-tier football competition in Bolivia. The first edition of the División Profesional, Apertura, took place in 2003, with Jorge Wilstermann crowned as the first league winner. The teams are placed in 3 tables, with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. Each team plays a total of 280 games in one season, and the winner is the team that has the most points at the end of the season.
The top two teams qualify for the Copa Libertadores main tournament or preliminary qualifications. Additionally, two teams qualify for the Copa Libertadores Qualification tournament or preliminary qualifications, and four teams qualify for the Copa Sudamericana tournament or preliminary qualifications.
The Primera División Costa-Rica is known for its impressive stadiums and attendance. The team with the largest stadium is Saprissa, boasting a total capacity of 23,000 spectators.
