Football League 2. Division in Cyprus: A Brief History
The Football League 2. Division in Cyprus was founded in 2021, with the aim of providing a higher level of football competition in the country. The league was established with the support of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and the Cyprus Football Federation (CFF).
The first games of the league took place in the 2021/22 season, with the first two teams to participate being Apollon Limassol and Anorthosis Famagusta. The two teams were joined by four other teams from the Cypriot First Division, namely: Olympiakos Nicosia, AEL Limassol, Nea Salamina and Ethnikos Achna.
The league is structured as a two-tier system, with the top tier being the Football League 1. Division and the second tier being the Football League 2. Division. Each team in the Football League 2. Division plays each other twice during the season, with the top two teams at the end of the season being promoted to the Football League 1. Division.
The Football League 2. Division in Cyprus is governed by the Cyprus Football Association, which is responsible for the organization and regulation of the league. The CFA also oversees the promotion and relegation system, as well as the organization of the cup competitions.
The 2022 2. Division season in Cyprus ended on 2023-01-07 with Omonia Aradippou claiming the title. In a tightly contested season, Omonia Aradippou won 6 of their 10 matches, and only 3 points separated the top three teams in the standings. Division season was an exciting one, and it will be remembered for Omonia Aradippou’s impressive performance. With only 3 points separating the top three teams, it was a thrilling season that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The 2. Division Cyprus is a football competition that has been running since 1953, when Aris Limassol won the first edition. The teams are divided into three tables, with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. The top teams are promoted to the 1.
