The Liga Mayor, or Major League, of the Dominican Republic was founded in the year 2000 and is the top tier of professional football in the country. It is organized by the Dominican Football Federation (FEDOFUT) and is composed of 10 teams from all over the country.
The first Liga Mayor season was held in 2001 with six teams competing for the championship. The inaugural champions were Atlético San Cristóbal, who defeated Cibao FC in the final. Since then, the league has grown to 10 teams and has become one of the most competitive leagues in the Caribbean.
The Liga Mayor is divided into two phases. In the first phase, the teams are split into two groups and play each other twice. At the end of the phase, the top four teams from each group advance to the second phase, where they play a round-robin tournament to determine the champion.
The Liga Mayor is governed by a Board of Directors, which is composed of representatives from the 10 teams. The Board is responsible for making decisions on matters such as scheduling, rules, and player transfers. The Board also oversees the Liga Mayor Cup, which is an annual tournament that is held between the teams in the league.
Since its inception, the Liga Mayor has grown to become one of the most popular sports leagues in the Dominican Republic. It is a source of pride for many Dominicans and has helped to promote the sport of football in the country.
The 2022 Liga Mayor season ended on 2022-10-15 with Atlético Pantoja as the champions. After a competitive 10-match season, Atlético Pantoja emerged victorious with seven wins, while the top three teams were separated by a mere eight points. The tight competition between the top teams made for an exciting season, with Atlético Pantoja eventually coming out on top. Their strong performance throughout the season was testament to their skill and determination, and they are now the proud champions of the 2022 Liga Mayor season.
