The 3. Liga is the third tier of the German football league system. It was founded in 2008 to replace the Regionalliga as the third tier of German football. The league is managed by the German Football Association (DFB).
The first 3. Liga season began in 2008 with 18 teams competing in three regional divisions. The teams were divided into two groups of nine teams each, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the promotion playoffs. The first 3. Liga champions were the VfL Osnabrück, who won the title in the 2008–09 season.
The 3. Liga is currently made up of 20 teams, divided into two divisions of 10 teams each. The teams play a total of 34 matches in a season, with the top four teams from each division advancing to the promotion playoffs. The winner of the promotion playoffs is then promoted to the 2. Bundesliga. The bottom two teams from each division are relegated to the Regionalliga.
The 3. Liga is organized by the German Football Association (DFB) and the German Football League (DFL). The DFB is responsible for the overall administration of the league, while the DFL is responsible for the organization and promotion of the league.
The 2022-2023 season of the 3. Liga Germany kicked off on July 22nd, 2022 and will conclude on May 27th, 2023. Currently, 20 teams are competing for the championship, with 380 out of 179 matches already played. The top three teams in the standings are SV Elversberg with 41 points, FC Saarbrücken and FC Saarbrücken with 33 and 31 points respectively. However, there are still 201 matches left to be played, and the top three teams are separated by only 10 points. The remaining 201 matches will be crucial in determining the champion of the 3. Liga Germany. As of now, the competition is tight and it remains to be seen who will come out on top.The largest stadium in the 3. Liga Germany is 1. FC Kaiserslautern, with a total capacity of 49,780. During the 21/22 season, the highest attendance per game was 41,324, during the match between 1. FC Kaiserslautern and TSV 1860 Munich. The total attendance for the season was 3,089,354, with an average attendance per game of 8,130.
The DFB (Deutscher Fußball-Bund) is the official organization in charge of the 3. Liga Germany, the third tier of the German football league system. The DFB is responsible for the organization and management of the league, including the appointment of referees, the scheduling of matches, and the selection of TV partners.
The DFB has partnered with several TV networks to broadcast 3. Liga Germany matches. These include Sky Deutschland, Sport1, and MagentaSport. Sky Deutschland broadcasts the majority of the matches, while Sport1 and MagentaSport broadcast select matches.
