Oberliga Hamburg is a German football league, founded in 1947 as the highest level of play in the state of Hamburg. The league is part of the German Football Association (DFB) and is the fifth tier of the German football league system. The league is divided into two divisions, the Oberliga Nord and the Oberliga Süd. The Oberliga Hamburg is the oldest of the five Oberligas in Germany.
The first season of the Oberliga Hamburg began in 1947 with eight teams competing in the league. The first champions of the Oberliga Hamburg were Hamburger SV, who went on to win the league in five of the first seven seasons. The league was suspended in 1948 due to the formation of the Bundesliga, but resumed in 1949 with ten teams. The league expanded to twelve teams in 1950, and has remained at this size ever since.
The Oberliga Hamburg is organized by the Hamburg Football Association (HFV), which is responsible for the administration of all football in the state. The HFV is made up of representatives from the clubs in the Oberliga Hamburg, as well as representatives from the DFB and the state government. The HFV is responsible for the organization of the league, the scheduling of matches, and the promotion and relegation of teams.
The Oberliga Hamburg is one of the most competitive leagues in Germany, and has produced some of the country’s top players. The league has also been the home to some of the most successful teams in German football history, including Hamburger SV, FC St. Pauli, and VfL Wolfsburg.
