The league is contested by 12 teams and is played in a double round-robin format, with each team playing the other twice during the season. The season runs from August to May, with the two best teams at the end of the season being crowned champions.
The first season of the Ligue 1 in Guinea was played in 1950, with the first game being played between AS Kaloum and AS Siguiri. AS Kaloum won the match 2-1. The first champions of the league were Hafia FC, who won the title in the 1950-51 season.
The league is currently run by the Guinean Football Federation (FGF), which is the governing body of football in the country. The FGF is responsible for organizing the league and its competitions, as well as the national team. The FGF also organizes the Coupe Nationale, which is the national cup competition.

The first edition of the league took place in 1961 when the first league winner was CSM Diables Noirs. The teams are placed in one table, with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. Each team plays a total of 21 games in one season and the winner is the team that has the most points at the end of the season. The standings are determined by the number of points each team has accumulated over the course of the season. Points are awarded for a win, draw, or loss, with three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss.
