Origins and Foundation of the Hungarian Football League NB I
The Hungarian Football League NB I was founded in 1901 as the Hungarian National Championship. The first ever game of the league was played on April 21st, 1901 between MTK Budapest and Budapesti TC. It ended in a 0-0 draw.
The league was initially made up of 8 teams, but this number was increased to 10 in 1909 and 12 in 1925. The league was suspended during World War II and was re-established in 1945. Since then, the league has grown to include 16 teams.
The league is currently structured as a double round-robin tournament, with each team playing each other twice. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is declared the champion. The bottom two teams are relegated to the second division, while the top two teams from the second division are promoted to the first division.
The Hungarian Football League NB I is currently sponsored by the Hungarian Football Federation, which is responsible for the organization and management of the league.
