The Santosh Trophy is an annual football tournament in India, founded in 1941 by the All India Football Federation. The trophy is named after the late Maharaja Sir Manmatha Nath Roy Chowdhary of Santosh, who was the president of the Indian Football Association from 1917 to 1918. The Santosh Trophy is the premier domestic football competition in India, and has been contested by the regional football associations of India since its inception.
The first edition of the Santosh Trophy was held in 1941, and was contested by the states of Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, United Provinces and Delhi. The tournament was won by Bengal, who defeated Bihar in the final. Since then, the tournament has been held annually, with the number of teams participating increasing over the years. Currently, 28 teams from all over India compete in the tournament.
The Santosh Trophy is organised by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the governing body for football in India. The AIFF is responsible for the administration of the tournament, including the selection of teams, scheduling of matches, and the awarding of the trophy. The AIFF also organises a number of other tournaments in India, including the I-League, the Indian Super League, and the Durand Cup.
The Santosh Trophy is an important part of Indian football history, and has been a platform for many of India’s best footballers to showcase their talents. The tournament has also provided an opportunity for the regional football associations of India to come together and compete against each other. The Santosh Trophy is a symbol of pride and honour for all those involved in Indian football, and is a testament to the growth and development of the sport in India.
