The Liga 2, or the second tier of Indonesian football, was founded in 1994 as the Liga Primer Indonesia (LPI). It was the first professional football league in Indonesia, and its founding marked the beginning of the professionalization of football in the country.
The first season of Liga 2 began in 1994, with 10 teams competing in the inaugural season. The teams were divided into two groups and played a double round-robin format. The top two teams from each group advanced to the playoffs, with the winner of the playoffs being crowned the champion.
The Liga 2 has since grown in popularity and stature, and is now the second-tier of Indonesian football. The league is currently composed of 20 teams, divided into two groups of 10 teams. The teams play a double round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the playoffs. The winner of the playoffs is crowned the champion of Liga 2.
The Liga 2 is managed by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), which is responsible for the organization and regulation of the league. The PSSI is also responsible for the promotion and relegation of teams between Liga 2 and Liga 1, the top tier of Indonesian football.
