Persian Gulf Pro League: A Brief History
The Persian Gulf Pro League, commonly known as the Iran Pro League, is the top professional football league in Iran. It was founded in 2001 as the Iranian Premier League, and is managed by the Iranian Football Federation. The league consists of 16 teams, and the season runs from August to May. The current champions are Persepolis.
The first season of the Persian Gulf Pro League began in 2001, with 12 teams competing. The inaugural champions were Esteghlal, who defeated Persepolis in the final. The following season, the number of teams was increased to 16, and the league has remained at that number ever since. The league has been dominated by the Tehran-based teams, with Esteghlal, Persepolis, and Pas Tehran winning a combined 15 titles between them.
The league is divided into two stages. The first stage is a round-robin tournament, in which each team plays each other team twice. At the end of the first stage, the top eight teams advance to the championship stage, while the bottom eight teams enter the relegation stage. The championship and relegation stages are also round-robin tournaments, with the top two teams in the championship stage being declared the champions and the bottom two teams in the relegation stage being relegated.
