Liga Leumit is the second tier of Israeli football, founded in 1999. It was created to replace the Liga Artzit, which had been the second division in the country since 1973. The league is managed by the Israel Football Association, and is contested by 16 teams each season.
The first season of Liga Leumit was held in 1999–2000, with Hapoel Jerusalem winning the title. Since then, the league has been contested every season, with Maccabi Petah Tikva winning the most titles (6). The current champions are Hapoel Kfar Saba, who won the 2019–20 season.
The league is divided into two regional divisions, North and South. At the end of each season, the top two teams in each division are promoted to the Israeli Premier League, while the bottom two teams in each division are relegated to Liga Alef. The two teams that finish in 3rd and 4th in each division then compete in a promotion/relegation play-off against the 14th and 15th placed teams in the Premier League.
The league is also home to several cup competitions, including the State Cup, the Toto Cup, and the Toto Cup Leumit. The State Cup is the most prestigious of these competitions, with the winners qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.
Liga Leumit is one of the most competitive leagues in Israel, and is a breeding ground for some of the country’s best players. It is also a great place for young players to develop their skills and gain experience.
The 2022 season of Liga Leumit Israel has started on the 18th of August, 2022 and will end on the 17th of March, 2023. Sixteen teams are competing for the championship and out of the 152 matches that have been scheduled, 240 have already been played. The top three teams in the league are separated by a mere 5 points, with Maccabi Petah Tikva leading the standings with 29 points, followed by Hapoel Acre and Hapoel Acre with 25 and 24 points respectively. However, there are still 88 matches left to be played, so the competition is far from over. The Liga Leumit Israel is the second tier of Israeli football, established in 1999. The first edition of the National League saw Tzafririm Holon crowned as the inaugural champions. The teams are divided into three tables, with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. Each team plays a total of 268 games in one season, with the winner being the team that accumulates the most points at the end of the season.
The Liga Leumit Israel is the official football league of Israel, and its largest TV partner is Sport 5. This partnership has enabled the league to reach a wider audience and gain more exposure. Sport 5 broadcasts all of the league’s matches, as well as providing analysis and commentary on the games. The league also has a number of other TV partners, including Channel 10, Channel 2, and Channel 1. These channels provide additional coverage of the league, including highlights, interviews, and analysis.
