The First League in Macedonia is the top professional football league in the country, founded in 1992. The league is composed of 12 teams and is organized by the Football Federation of Macedonia. The First League is the highest level of the football league system in Macedonia, and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Second League.
The first season of the First League in Macedonia was held in 1992 and was won by FK Vardar Skopje. The following season, 1993–94, saw the league expanded to 14 teams. FK Sileks Kratovo won the league that season. The league was reduced to 12 teams in the 1995–96 season, and FK Sloga Jugomagnat Skopje won the title. The following season, 1996–97, saw the league expand to 14 teams again, and FK Vardar Skopje won the title.
The league has been dominated by FK Vardar Skopje, who have won the title a record 28 times, including a streak of seven consecutive titles from 2009 to 2015. The most successful other clubs are FK Sileks Kratovo, who have won the title 13 times, and FK Sloga Jugomagnat Skopje, who have won the title 8 times.
The current structure of the First League in Macedonia is as follows: the 12 teams play each other twice in a double round-robin format, with the champion and the runner-up qualifying for the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League respectively. The bottom two teams are relegated to the Second League, and the top two teams from the Second League are promoted to the First League.
The 2022 season of the First League Macedonia kicked off on August 6th, 2022 and is set to conclude on March 8th, 2023. Currently, 12 teams are competing for the championship and out of the 108 matches that have been scheduled, 132 have already been played. The top three teams in the standings are separated by only 8 points, with Struga leading the pack with 33 points, followed by Shkupi 1927 with 28 points and Shkupi 1927 with 25 points. However, there are still 24 matches to be played before the season ends. It is still anyone’s game, and with the top three teams so close together, the competition is sure to be fierce for the remainder of the season. The 1. MFL (First League Macedonia) is the top tier of Macedonian football. It was first established in 1992, with Vardar Skopje being the inaugural champions. The teams are placed in one table, with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. The bottom two teams are relegated to the 2. MFL. Each team plays a total of 23 games in one season, and the team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the champion.
The First League Macedonia is home to some of the largest stadiums in the country, with Vardar Skopje boasting the largest capacity of 36,460. FK Rabotnički Skopje follows closely behind with a total capacity of 36,460. Attendance at First League Macedonia matches is usually high, with many of the stadiums regularly reaching capacity.
The Football Federation of Macedonia (FFM) is the official organization responsible for the management and organization of the First League Macedonia. The FFM is in charge of the league’s TV partners, sponsors, and other official activities.
