The Malta Football League Challenge (MFLC) was founded in 2020 as the top-tier league in Maltese football. It is the successor of the Maltese Premier League, which had been in existence since 1909. The MFLC was created to provide a more competitive and professional environment for Maltese football, with the aim of improving the standard of the game in the country.
The MFLC consists of 12 teams divided into two divisions, the Premier Division and the First Division. Each team plays each other twice during the season, with the top four teams in the Premier Division qualifying for the playoffs. The winner of the playoffs is crowned the MFLC champion.
The MFLC is managed by the Malta Football Association (MFA), which is responsible for the organisation and administration of the league. The MFA is responsible for the appointment of referees, the setting of the fixtures, and the organisation of the playoffs. The MFA is also responsible for the selection of players for the national team.
The MFLC is governed by the rules and regulations of FIFA and UEFA, and is subject to the same disciplinary and financial regulations as other professional leagues. The MFLC is also subject to the rules and regulations of the Maltese Football Association, which are designed to ensure the integrity of the league and promote fair play.
