The Eredivisie Women is the top level of professional women’s football in the Netherlands. It was founded in 2007 and is organized by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB). The league currently consists of eight teams, with the most recent addition being ADO Den Haag in 2020.
The first season of the Eredivisie Women began in 2007 with six teams: FC Twente, AZ Alkmaar, SC Heerenveen, Willem II, FC Utrecht and ADO Den Haag. The inaugural season saw AZ Alkmaar crowned as champions, with FC Twente finishing as runners-up. Since then, the league has grown to include eight teams, with the most recent addition being ADO Den Haag in 2020.
The Eredivisie Women is divided into two divisions, the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie. The Eredivisie is the top division and is contested by the eight teams. The Eerste Divisie is the second division and is contested by twelve teams. The top two teams from the Eerste Divisie are promoted to the Eredivisie at the end of each season.
The league is governed by the KNVB and is sponsored by the Dutch bank ABN AMRO. The league is broadcast on Fox Sports Netherlands, with the matches also being streamed online. The league is also supported by the Eredivisie Women Foundation, which was established in 2018 to promote the development of women’s football in the Netherlands.
