The Primera División, or Liga 1, is the top-tier professional football league in Peru. It was founded in 1912, making it one of the oldest professional football leagues in South America. The league is organized by the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF), and is contested by 16 teams. The current champions are Universitario de Deportes.
The first season of the Primera División was played in 1912 and was contested by seven teams: Alianza Lima, Atlético Chalaco, Club Lima Cricket, Club Sport Cristal, Club Sport La Salle, Club Sport Progreso and Sport Boys. The first champions were Club Sport Progreso, who won the title with a record of 10 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.
Since then, the Primera División has gone through several changes in its structure and format. In the early years, the league was contested by up to 18 teams, but this was reduced to 16 teams in the late 1990s. The current format consists of two stages, the Apertura and Clausura, with each stage lasting for six months. At the end of each stage, the team with the most points is declared the champion.
The corporate structure of the Primera División is managed by the FPF. The FPF is responsible for organizing and regulating the league, as well as for the selection of referees and the organization of the Copa Peru, the national cup competition.
