I Liga, the top division of the Polish football league system, was founded in 1927 and is the oldest football league in Poland. The league was initially known as the Polish Football Championship and was made up of teams from the country’s major cities. The first games of the league were played in the spring of 1927 and the league has since grown to include 16 teams.
The league is structured as a single-table system, with the top team at the end of the season being crowned the champions. The bottom two teams are then relegated to the II Liga, the second division of the Polish football league system. The teams finishing in the top eight positions qualify for the Polish Cup, while the teams finishing in the top four positions qualify for the UEFA Europa League.
The I Liga is managed by the Professional Football League of Poland (PFLP), which is responsible for the organization, promotion and development of the league. The PFLP is made up of representatives from the 16 clubs in the I Liga, as well as representatives from the II Liga and the Polish Cup.
The I Liga has been a major success story in Polish football, with the league attracting some of the best players in the country. The league has also seen some of the most successful clubs in the country, such as Legia Warsaw, Wisła Kraków and Lech Poznań, all of which have won the league title multiple times.
The 2022 I Liga Poland season kicked off on July 16th, 2022, and will conclude on June 3rd, 2023. 18 teams are currently vying for the championship, with 306 of the 162 matches already played. The top three teams in the standings are currently separated by just 5 points, with ŁKS Łódź leading the pack with 37 points, followed by Puszcza Niepołomice and Puszcza Niepołomice with 34 and 32 points respectively. However, there are still 144 matches to be played, making the competition for the top spot far from over. The I Liga Poland is a football competition with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. The teams are placed in one table, with the best teams being promoted to the I Liga and the last four teams being relegated to the III Liga, Group 3, Group 1, Group 2 and Group 4. In the 22/23 season, Polonia Warszawa, Kotwica Kołobrzeg, Siarka Tarnobrzeg and Zagłębie Lubin II were promoted to the II Liga, while KS Górnik Polkowice, GKS Jastrzębie and Stomil Olsztyn were relegated to the II Liga. Each team plays a total of 34 games in one season and the winner is the team that has the most points at the end of the season.
The largest stadium in the I Liga Poland is Widzew Łódź, with a total capacity of 18,018. During the 21/22 season, the total attendance across the league was 626,407, resulting in an average attendance per game of 2,053.
The Polish Football Association (PZPN) is the official organization in charge of the II Liga Poland. The league’s largest television partner is TVP, the public broadcaster of Poland.
