Liga 3, the third tier of professional football in Portugal, was founded in 1990 as the third level of the Portuguese football pyramid. It is organized by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and is composed of 20 teams.
The first season of Liga 3 began in 1990 with 12 teams, and the inaugural championship was won by Sporting Clube de Portugal B. Since then, the league has grown to include 20 teams, with the most recent expansion occurring in 2014.
The league is divided into two divisions, the North Division and the South Division. Each division consists of 10 teams, with the top four teams from each division qualifying for the playoffs. The winner of the playoffs is promoted to the Segunda Liga, the second tier of Portuguese football.
The corporate structure of Liga 3 is overseen by the FPF, which is responsible for the organization and regulation of the league. The FPF is also responsible for the selection of referees and the scheduling of matches.
Liga 3 has become an important part of the Portuguese football landscape, providing an opportunity for young players to gain experience in a competitive environment. It is also a source of pride for many clubs in Portugal, as it is the highest level of football that many of them can reach.
The 2022 season of Liga 3 Portugal kicked off on 2022-08-21 and will conclude on 2023-03-12. So far, 12 teams have competed in 264 out of 168 matches. At the moment, the top three teams in the standings are separated by only two points. Vilaverdense is in first place with 20 points, followed by Felgueiras 1932 with 19 points and then Felgueiras 1932 with 18 points. However, there are still 96 matches left to be played, so the standings could change drastically. It is sure to be an exciting season as all 12 teams battle it out for the championship.
