Origins and Foundation of the First League in Russia
The First League in Russia was founded in 1992, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The league was created to replace the Soviet First League, which had been in existence since 1936. The league is made up of 20 teams from around the country, who compete in a two-stage season. The top two teams from the First League are promoted to the Russian Premier League, while the bottom two teams are relegated to the Second League.
The first games of the First League were played in 1992, with the inaugural season consisting of 24 teams. The first season was won by FC Torpedo Moscow, who went on to win the league again in 1993. The league has since been won by a variety of teams, with FC Krasnodar winning the most titles with four.
The corporate structure of the First League is overseen by the Russian Football Union (RFS). The RFS is responsible for the organization of the league, including the scheduling of matches, the appointment of referees, and the enforcement of rules and regulations. The RFS also works with the clubs to ensure that the league is financially viable and that the clubs are able to compete in a fair and competitive environment.
The 2022 season of the First League Russia kicked off on July 17th, 2022 and will finish on June 3rd, 2023. Currently, 18 teams are fighting for the championship, with 306 out of 180 matches already played. The top three teams in the standings are Baltika with 41 points, Alaniya Vladikavkaz and Alaniya Vladikavkaz with 38 and 37 points respectively, though the top three are separated by only 4 points. With 126 matches still to be played, the race for the championship is far from over. It is anyone’s guess who will come out on top and take the title. The First Division of the Russian Football League was first established in 1994, with Chernomorets Novorossiysk being the inaugural winner. The teams are divided into three tables, with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. The top team is promoted to the Premier Liga, while the bottom four teams are relegated to the FNL 2, Group 4 Second Division, Group 1 Second Division, Group 3 Second Division, Group 4 Second Division, and Group 2. In the 22/23 season, Metallurg Lipetsk, FC Kamaz Naberezhnye Chelny, PFC Kuban, and Olimp-Dolgoprudniy were all promoted to the First Division, while Rotor Volgograd were relegated. Each team plays a total of 404 games in one season, and the winner is the team with the most points at the end of the season.
The First League Russia is home to some of the largest stadiums in the country, with Rotor Volgograd boasting a total capacity of 45,568. During the 21/22 season, the highest attendance per game was 8,229, which was recorded during the match between Nizhny Novgorod and Tom Tomsk. The average attendance per game was 4,530.
The First Division of the Russian Football League is supported by the largest TV partner, Yandex. The official organization in charge of the league is the Football National League. This organization is responsible for the organization and management of the league, as well as the promotion of the league and its teams.
