The Scottish Championship is the second tier of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). The Championship was formed in 2013, when the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League merged to form the SPFL. This merger saw the creation of two divisions, the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Championship.
The first Championship season was the 2013-14 season, which saw the introduction of a 12-team league format. The teams were divided into two groups of six, with the top four teams in each group progressing to the play-offs. The play-offs saw the top two teams from each group enter a two-legged semi-final, with the winners progressing to a one-legged final. The winner of the final was crowned the Scottish Championship winner.
Since then, the Championship has continued to be the second tier of the SPFL. The league currently consists of 10 teams, with the top two teams at the end of the season being promoted to the Premiership and the bottom two teams being relegated to League One. The Championship also features a play-off system, with the fourth placed team entering a two-legged semi-final against the team that finished in third place. The winner of the semi-final then plays the second placed team in a one-legged final, with the winner being promoted to the Premiership.
The Scottish Championship has become an important part of the Scottish football landscape, providing a platform for teams to progress to the top tier of the SPFL. The league has also provided a platform for some of Scotland’s most talented young players to showcase their talents, with many of them going on to play for Scotland’s top teams.
The 2022 Scottish Championship season has just begun, with the first match taking place on July 30th, 2022, and the season ending on May 5th, 2023. Ten teams are currently competing for the Championship title, and 180 out of the total of 110 matches have already been played. The top three teams in the standings are currently separated by just one point, with Ayr United leading the way with 29 points, followed closely by Morton and Morton with 28 points each. However, there is still a long way to go, with 70 matches still left to be played. It is sure to be an exciting end to the season, with the top three teams all in contention for the Championship title. With so many matches still to be played, anything could happen in the coming months. The Sheffield Wednesday team has the largest stadium in the Championship England league, with a total capacity of 39,859. During the 21/22 season, the highest attendance per game was 36,514, which was during the match between Leeds United and Huddersfield Town. The total attendance for the season was 5,961,550, with an average attendance per game of 18,751.
