The Lowland Football League (LFL) is a semi-professional football league in Scotland. Founded in 2013, it is the fifth tier of the Scottish football league system and is a full member of the Scottish Football Association. The league currently consists of 18 teams, all of which are based in the Lowland region of Scotland.
The LFL was formed in 2013 following the dissolution of the East of Scotland Football League and the South of Scotland Football League. The two leagues had been in existence since the 1920s and had become increasingly uncompetitive in recent years, with teams struggling to find enough players to fill their rosters. The LFL was created to provide a more competitive environment for teams in the Lowland region.
The first season of the LFL took place in 2013-14, with 12 teams competing in the league. The inaugural champions were Spartans, who defeated East Kilbride in the final. The following season saw the league expand to 14 teams, and the number of teams has grown steadily since then. In 2020-21, 18 teams will compete in the league.
The LFL is a full member of the Scottish Football Association and is governed by a board of directors. The league is split into two divisions, with teams playing each other twice in the regular season. At the end of the season, the top two teams in each division are promoted to the Scottish Professional Football League. The bottom two teams in each division are relegated to the East of Scotland Football League or the South of Scotland Football League.
The LFL has become increasingly competitive in recent years, with teams from the league regularly competing in the Scottish Cup and other national competitions. The league has also seen an increase in attendances, with more fans coming out to watch the games. The LFL is an important part of the Scottish football landscape, and it looks set to continue to grow in the years to come.
The 2022 Scotland Lowland League season has kicked off on July 23rd, 2022 and will continue until April 22nd, 2023. With 18 teams competing for the championship, 342 out of 243 matches have already been played. At the moment, the top three teams are separated by a mere 5 points, with Rangers II leading the pack with 41 points, followed by Celtic II and Celtic II with 36 points each. However, there are still 99 matches left to be played, so the standings could change drastically in the coming weeks. The teams in the top three have shown great promise, but with 99 matches left to be played, the race for the championship is still wide open. As the season progresses, the teams in the top three will have to battle it out to stay ahead of the competition.
