The Prva Liga, or First League, is the top division of football in Serbia. It was founded in 2006, following the dissolution of the Serbia and Montenegro SuperLiga. It is contested by 16 clubs, with the champion qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
The first season of the Prva Liga began in 2006, with 12 clubs competing. The inaugural champions were FK Partizan, who won the title by a single point over city rivals FK Crvena Zvezda. The first round of matches was played on April 15th, 2006, with FK Partizan defeating FK Rad 1-0.
Since its inception, the Prva Liga has been organized by the Football Association of Serbia. The league is divided into two phases, with the top eight teams playing in the championship phase and the bottom eight teams playing in the relegation phase.
