The Eerste Divisie, or First Division, is the top-tier football league in Suriname. It was established in 1965, making it one of the oldest football leagues in South America. The league was founded by the Surinamese Football Association (SFA), which is the governing body of football in Suriname.
The first season of the Eerste Divisie began in 1965 with four teams: Robinhood, Transvaal, Voorwaarts, and Inter Moengotapoe. The inaugural season was won by Robinhood, who went on to win the title again the following season. Since then, the league has grown to include 12 teams, with each team playing each other twice during the regular season.
The league is divided into two divisions, the A-Division and the B-Division. The top four teams from the A-Division qualify for the playoffs, while the bottom four teams are relegated to the B-Division. The top two teams from the B-Division are then promoted to the A-Division for the following season.
The Eerste Divisie is a semi-professional league, with teams competing for the Surinamese Cup, the Surinamese Super Cup, and the Surinamese Champions Cup. The league is managed by the SFA, with the teams being owned by private investors and clubs. The league is a member of CONCACAF and FIFA.
