The Thai League 1, or T1, is the top division of the Thai football league system. It was founded in 1996 as the Thailand Premier League, and was renamed to the Thai League 1 in 2017. The league is contested by 16 teams, with the season running from February to October.
The first season of the Thailand Premier League featured 12 teams, with the champion being Bangkok Bank. The following season saw the league grow to 16 teams, and the format has remained the same ever since. The league is managed by the Football Association of Thailand, and is divided into two stages. The first stage is a double round-robin tournament, with each team playing each other twice. The second stage is a single round-robin tournament, with each team playing each other once. The top two teams from the first stage qualify for the championship playoff, while the bottom two teams face relegation.
The Thai League 1 is one of the most competitive leagues in Southeast Asia, and has produced some of the region’s best players. The league has also produced some of the region’s most successful clubs, including Muangthong United, Chonburi, and Buriram United. The league has also seen some of the world’s top players, including former Manchester United star Shinji Kagawa and former Arsenal forward Park Chu-Young.
The Thai League 1 is a highly competitive and entertaining league, and continues to grow in popularity each season. With the addition of a new team in 2020, the league is set to become even more competitive and exciting.
The 2022 season of the Thai League 1 is off to a great start, with the season kicking off on August 12th, 2022 and ending on May 14th, 2023. Sixteen teams are competing for the championship, and after 240 out of the 120 matches that will be played, the top three teams are currently separated by only 10 points. Buriram United is currently in the lead with 39 points, followed by Chonburi FC with 30 points and Chonburi FC with 29 points. However, with 120 matches still to be played, the standings could still change drastically. The Thai League 1 is always an exciting competition and this season is no exception. With 120 matches still to be played, there are sure to be plenty of surprises and close finishes as the teams fight for the championship.
