Primera División - Apertura is the top-tier professional football league in Uruguay. It was founded in 1900, making it one of the oldest football leagues in the world. The league is made up of 16 teams that compete in a double round-robin format. The season starts in August and ends in May. The league is divided into two halves, the Apertura and the Clausura, each with its own champion.
The first Primera División - Apertura season was held in 1900 with four teams competing: Albion, Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, Montevideo Wanderers and Nacional. Nacional won the inaugural season and have since gone on to become the most successful team in the league, having won the title a record 47 times.
The league is governed by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) and is divided into two divisions, the Primera División and the Segunda División. The top two teams from the Primera División are promoted to the Primera División - Apertura and the bottom two teams are relegated to the Segunda División. The winner of the Primera División - Apertura is crowned the Uruguayan champion and earns a spot in the Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition.
The 2022 Primera División - Apertura season came to a close on 2022-07-23 with Liverpool Montevideo as champions, having won 10 of their 15 matches. The competition was incredibly tight at the top of the standings, with just 5 points separating the top three teams. The standout players of the season were Thiago Nicolás Borbas Silva, Thiago Vecino Berriel and Germán Agustín Rodríguez Rosano, who scored 18, 15 and 14 goals respectively. Their performances were integral to their respective teams’ success and helped to make the Primera División - Apertura season one of the most thrilling in recent memory.
