The Segunda División in Uruguay is the second tier of professional football in the country. It was founded in 1932 and is administered by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF). The first season of the Segunda División was played in 1933 and featured eight teams. The first champions were Central Español, who beat Racing Club de Montevideo in the final.
The Segunda División is divided into two groups of eight teams each, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the playoffs. The playoffs consist of a two-legged tie between the two group winners, with the winner being crowned the Segunda División champions and earning promotion to the Primera División. The bottom two teams in each group are relegated to the Tercera División.
The Segunda División has undergone several changes over the years. In 1995, the league was reorganized into four groups of six teams each, and in 2003, the league was reorganized again into two groups of eight teams each. The current format has been in place since 2013.
The Segunda División is an important part of Uruguayan football, providing an opportunity for teams to compete for promotion to the top division. It also serves as a platform for young players to develop their skills and gain experience before making the jump to the Primera División.
The 2022 Segunda División season came to a thrilling conclusion on 2022-10-23, with Racing Montevideo emerging as the champions. The standout players of the season were Diego Daniel Vera Méndez, who scored an impressive 16 goals, Daniel Nicolás González Álvarez, who scored 12 goals, and Maximiliano Lombardi Rodríguez, who also scored 12 goals. These three players were instrumental in helping their teams to success, and they will be remembered for their performances throughout the season. The Segunda División Uruguay is the second tier of professional football in Uruguay, and is organized by the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF).
