The US Open Cup: A Brief History
The US Open Cup is the oldest soccer tournament in the United States, dating back to 1914. It was originally established as the National Challenge Cup by the United States Football Association (now known as U.S. Soccer). The tournament was open to all affiliated amateur and professional soccer clubs in the country.
The first tournament was held in 1914 and was won by Brooklyn Field Club. The tournament continued to grow in popularity and size over the years, with the number of entrants increasing from 8 in 1914 to 80 in 1924. In the early years, teams from the American Soccer League dominated the tournament, with Bethlehem Steel winning five titles in a row from 1915 to 1919.
In the late 1920s, the tournament was renamed the US Open Cup. The tournament was expanded to include teams from all divisions of the USSF, including amateur, semi-pro, and professional teams. In the 1930s, the tournament was further expanded to include teams from all over the country, including teams from the Midwest, South, and West.
Today, the US Open Cup is an annual tournament open to all USSF-affiliated clubs. The tournament has been dominated by MLS teams in recent years, but teams from lower divisions have been able to break through and win the title, such as the Rochester Rhinos in 1999 and the Charleston Battery in 2008.
The US Open Cup is a knockout football competition that has been running since 1914, when the first cup winner was Brooklyn Field Club. The competition consists of 8 rounds, with the game winners qualifying to the next stage. The final is a single game, and the winner is crowned the US Open Cup champion. The standings are determined by the number of wins and losses each team has achieved throughout the tournament.
The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) is the official organization in charge of the US Open Cup, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States. The largest television partner for the US Open Cup is ESPN+, which broadcasts the tournament’s matches and provides exclusive content for fans.
