The Primera División de Venezuela, commonly known as the Liga Venezolana, is the top-tier professional football league in Venezuela. Founded in 1921, it is one of the oldest football leagues in South America and the longest-running in Venezuela.
The league was founded on April 15, 1921, by the Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) and the first season began on May 8, 1921. The original teams were Caracas FC, Deportivo Galicia, Liceo de Caracas, Club Español de Caracas, Club Táchira, and Club Portugués de Caracas.
The league has been dominated by Caracas FC, who have won the Primera División title a record 27 times. Other teams to have won the title include Deportivo Táchira (11 titles), Deportivo Anzoátegui (8 titles), Deportivo Galicia (7 titles), and Deportivo Lara (4 titles).
The league is currently composed of 18 teams, divided into two divisions. The top four teams from each division qualify for the playoffs, with the winners of each division facing off in the final. The winner of the final is crowned the champion of the Primera División.
The Primera División is governed by the FVF and is the highest professional football league in Venezuela. All teams must comply with the regulations of the FVF, including the financial requirements, in order to compete in the league.
The 2022 Primera División season in Venezuela came to a close on 2022-10-30 with Metropolitanos FC emerging as the champions after winning two matches out of six. The top three teams in the standings were separated by just two points, making it one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory. The standout players of the season were Kevin Stiben Viveros Rodallega, Jovanny David Bolívar Alvarado and Aquiles David Ocanto Querales. The average attendance for the league is around 15,000, making it one of the most popular football leagues in the region.
