Origins and Foundation of Serie B in Italy
The Italian Serie B was founded in 1929, when the Lega Calcio was created. The Lega Calcio was formed by the merger of the two main Italian football leagues of the time, the Lega Nord and the Lega Sud. The Lega Calcio was divided into two divisions, Serie A and Serie B.
The first Serie B season was played in 1929-30, with 18 teams competing in the division. The teams were divided into two groups of nine, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the playoffs. The playoffs were played in a single-elimination format, with the winner being declared the Serie B champion.
In the early years of Serie B, the teams were organized into regional divisions. This system was eventually replaced by a single division in 1934. Since then, the number of teams in the division has fluctuated, ranging from 18 to 22 teams.
The corporate structure of Serie B has also changed over the years. It is currently owned by the Lega Serie B, a non-profit organization that is responsible for the organization and promotion of the league. The Lega Serie B is composed of the clubs that compete in the division, as well as representatives from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC).
The 2022 Serie B Italy season started on August 13th, 2022 and will finish on May 19th, 2023. 20 teams are competing for the championship and 380 out of 199 matches have already been played. The top three teams in the standings are currently separated by 8 points, with Frosinone leading the pack with 31 points, followed by Reggina and Reggina with 26 and 23 points respectively. However, there are still 181 matches left to be played. The first edition of the Serie B took place in 1929 when the first league winner was Casale. The teams are placed in 3 tables, with a promotion and relegation system for the best and worst-performing teams. The best teams are promoted to the Serie A, while the last 4 teams are relegated to the Serie C, Girone A, Girone B and Girone C. In the 22/23 season, Modena, Bari, Palermo and Südtirol were promoted to the Serie B, while Venezia, Genoa and Cagliari were relegated to Serie B. Each team plays a total of 417 games in one season and the winner is the team that has the most points at the end of the season.
The largest stadium in the Italian Serie B is Chievo Verona, with a total capacity of 39,371. During the 21/22 season, the highest attendance per game was 28,531, which was recorded during the match between Palermo and Cittadella. The total attendance for the 21/22 season was 2,634,506, with an average attendance per game of 7,506.
The largest TV partner for Italy’s Serie B is DAZN. The organization that is in charge of the league is Lega B. DAZN is the official streaming partner for Serie B, providing fans with access to all the action from the league. Lega B is responsible for the organization and management of the league, including the scheduling of matches, the selection of referees, and the enforcement of rules and regulations.
