Virsliga: A Brief History
The Virsliga, or the Latvian Higher League, is the top division of professional football in Latvia. It was founded in 1991 and is currently composed of 10 teams. The league is organized and managed by the Latvian Football Federation (LFF).
The first season of the Virsliga began in 1991, with six teams competing for the title. The inaugural season saw Skonto Riga crowned as champions, and they went on to win the title a further 13 times over the following two decades. The current champions are Riga FC, who won the 2019 season.
The league operates a promotion and relegation system with the Latvian First League, with the top two teams from the First League being promoted to the Virsliga each season. The bottom two teams from the Virsliga are relegated to the First League.
