The Liga Interregional - Group 1 in Switzerland was founded in 2010 as the third tier of Swiss football. It is made up of 10 teams from the cantons of Aargau, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Bern, Fribourg, Jura, Lucerne, Schaffhausen, Solothurn and Zurich. The teams play each other twice in a round-robin format, with the top two teams at the end of the season being promoted to the Swiss Challenge League.
The first games of the Liga Interregional - Group 1 were played on August 21, 2010, when SC Derendingen faced FC Wohlen, and FC Köniz faced FC Schötz. The first season was won by FC Wohlen, who went on to win the Swiss Challenge League the following season.
The league is managed by the Swiss Football Association (SFV), who are responsible for the administration and regulation of all football leagues in Switzerland. The SFV also appoints the referees and sets the rules for the league.
The Liga Interregional - Group 1 is a semi-professional league, with most of the teams competing in the league having amateur status. The teams are not allowed to pay players, although they may receive a small stipend to cover travel and other expenses.
The Liga Interregional - Group 1 is an important part of Swiss football, providing a platform for players to develop their skills and gain experience before making the step up to the Swiss Challenge League. The league also provides a chance for local clubs to compete against each other and gain recognition.
The 2022 season of the Swiss Liga Interregional - Group 1 has started on the 20th of August and will finish on the 17th of June 2023. The competition is fierce as 14 teams are competing for the championship. So far, 210 out of the total of 104 matches have been played. The top three teams in the standings have a difference of only 7 points between them, with Monthey leading the pack with 33 points, followed by Servette II and Servette II with 27 and 26 points respectively. However, there are still 106 matches to be played, so the competition is far from over.
